The objective of scaling & root planing is to remove plaque and tartar (calculus) from the tooth, both above and below the gumline (in the pockets). This is a non-surgical procedure which may or may not require topical or local anesthesia, depending on the patient's comfort level. The procedure will take several visits to complete so to remove as much of the irritants as possible, and to allow the gums to begin the healing process. Antibiotics may or may not be used as well.
