A smile is one of the first things you notice about another person and simple surgical procedures are available to improve your smile, make you look younger, and boost your confidence so you can be at your best.
Here are some of the most common periodontal plastic surgeries performed in our office. Several different procedures may be needed to build the framework for your perfect smile.
Crown lengthening is performed to correct a “gummy” smile, or to expose more of the tooth prior to a restorative treatment. In some cases, the teeth look short and stubby and partly covered by gum tissue. Excess gum tissue can easily be removed to reshape an uneven gumline, expose the natural tooth length, and provide a fuller, more attractive smile.
Gum grafting is generally performed to cover exposed root surfaces that make the teeth look longer, as long as there has not been excessive bone loss between the teeth. The gum tissue used for grafting can either come from the patient (usually the palate), a tissue bank (such as those used for skin grafting in burn patients), or a synthetic material.
Ridge modification procedures are used to recapture the natural countour of the gums, which have been changed due to periodontal disease, trauma, loss of teeth, or birth defects. During the ridge modification procedure, the defect is filled with bone graft material or a similar synthetic product and then sutured closed. When healing occurs, the esthetic appearance of the jaw is much improved around bridges and implants.
